Crowley Lake
Crowley Lake is open to fishing from the last Saturday in April to November 15th. The marina closes October 31st.
Crowley Lake is among the most nutrient rich, fertile and productive lakes in the state. The fish grow fast and get strong in this high altitude alkaline lake. Credit the CA Fish & Game for implementing regulations on Crowley that foster the success of this big fish fishery. The lake is stocked heavily in the fall (after the bait fishing season) with juvenile trout that will then “grow up” in the lake system and become more “wild” than the typical hatchery raised fish. Along with this boost of hatchery fingerlings, thousands of wild trout are reared in tributary streams like the Upper Owens River, McGee Creek, Convict Creek and Crooked Creek then migrate into the lake.
Fishing Crowley is great to get that “big fish fix”. It is not uncommon to land 20+ fish per angler which average16”-18” with the occasional whopper well over 20”. It can be great training for novices learning to handle strong fish that run into the backing without the added stress of currents and snags found in the rivers. Kids and beginners who have had earlier introduction to casting and reeling a fly rod can do well on the lake with a limited amount of casting and presenting flies like stream fishing requires.
